Claire has beena a writer since a young age. In high school and college her writing focused on poetry and essays. She published a few poems and critical essays while teaching at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa.
As a young mother, she wrote children's stories. Years later she wrote a special story for each of her grandchildren.
After acting in community theatre, she wrote a one-act contemporary play in 1980, followed by its sequel. Twenty years later, she used some of the same characters in a third play, set in 2000.
It wasn't until 2000 that she began to write for young adults and middle grades. Her daughter and granddaughter hooked her on Cynthia Voigt's work. Now the novels of many fine writers for young adults have become some of her favorite reading.
